Senator Josh Newman

Josh Newman is a United States Army veteran, community activist, non-profit founder, and State Senator for the 29th Senate district of California. A graduate of Yale, Senator Newman has been motivated by public service his whole life. Every career choice he has made and every community group or organization he has been involved with has been driven by his desire to give back to his community.

Prior to being elected to the California State Senate, Newman served as founder and Executive Director of ArmedForce2Workforce, a non-profit initiative founded in 2012 to assist young veterans in the Orange County/Greater Los Angeles area in the pursuit of rewarding, career-oriented employment.  At the core of Af2wf’s approach was the fundamental belief that no single group has as much to offer to employers as young veterans.

Senator Newman himself served as an officer in the United States Army with active duty assignments with a nuclear weapons detachment in South Korea and with a conventional artillery battalion in the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. His post-service experience includes work in local government, marketing and public relations, film and video production, and mobile and Internet media technology.

In the State Senate, Newman chairs the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. He also sits on the Business and Professions, Health, Insurance, and Human Services Committees. His legislation focuses on finding common sense, pragmatic solutions that help improve the quality of life for California families.

In his freshmen term, he has introduced eighteen pieces of legislation that focus on improvements for veterans, mental health, education, jobs, and transportation. His leadership on these issues has been thoughtful and strives to make government work more efficiently and effectively for the communities that he serves.

Senator Newman has long been active in his community, and his roles have included service as a member of the Executive Board of Neighbors United for Fullerton (NUFF); as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) providing mentorship and advocacy for an at-risk youth in the Orange County foster care system; as co-founder and board member of the Veteran Business Network of Greater Los Angeles; as a member of the local chapters of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); and as a regular volunteer for the Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity, as well as a host of other local community efforts.

His wife, Darcy Lewis, is a native of Orange County and works as a senior financial analyst at a locally based Fortune 500 insurance company. They reside in Fullerton with their daughter and three rescue Chihuahuas.
