Assemblymember Low Turned Away From Blood Drive

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

(Sacramento) – Assembly Joint Resolution 16, authored by Assemblymembers Evan Low, Eduardo Garcia and Richard Bloom, was introduced in response to the FDA’s new blood donor guidelines that continue to discriminate against gay and bisexual men. The authors of AJR 16, and supporter Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, attempted to participate in the Capitol Employees Blood Drive but Assemblymember Low was not permitted to donate blood. Though a healthy and active member of society, Assemblymember Low was turned away based on FDA policies that assume his sexuality puts him at too high a risk for HIV transmission.
